Messageboards aren’t really social media in the sense that Facebook or twitter is. If people regularly posted photos of their holidays or their dinner, then maybe they’d be comparable, but messageboards are more places to discuss things.
There’s a big difference in my mind between posting pictures of yourself with cat ears, and discussing whether West Ham need another defensive midfielder, or what Boris appointing certain people to the ministry means.
Twitter has a bit of discussion, but you get the feeling that people are more hoping that their ‘witty’ fifteen word tweet will go viral. Again, attention-seeking rather than discussion seems to be the name of the game.

I got rid of all Social Media in June last year.
In the last 12 or so months, I've done more with my career and personal life than I had over the previous 5 years.
